Oh, my beloved homeland...

Vocal and lute music from King Matthias till Prince Rákóczi

The theme of the disc is the Hungarian Renaissance: it contains 13 songs with lute accompaniment and seven interludes on the lute. Twelve songs are Hungarian: three by Sebestyén Tinódi, three by Bálint Balassi,one by Janus Pannonius, one by Péter Bornemisza, one by János Szappanos Debreceni, one from the Gyöngyösi codex, one Psalm from the Eperjes gradual. (Though the Horatius song ["Against the Greedy"] is an exception, it still has Hungarian references as the ode collection of pastor János Honterus in Brassó (Brasov), 1584, already coupled it with the melody I am using, even though it was sung with the original Latin text. The lute pieces are mainly dances composed by foreign composers using Hungarian melodies or foreign compositions played in Hungary. The two "choreas" from the Lőcse virginal book are the exception. Even though their original is a Hungarian composition, they survived in the form of organ tabulators just like Jacob Paix's "Ungarescha", and I transcribed them for the lute. I am sure, however, that the same was done to all popular pieces in their own time.
